In this new science fiction novel, readers are introduced to a futuristic world where no one can see. The entire community lives by the philosophy of Truesight: ‘Blindness is purity. Blindness is unity. Blindness is freedom.’ To see is to be distracted. Those who see are materialistic and shallow.

Jacob is a thirteen-year-old boy who lives with his parents in Harmony. All day everyday Jacob and his neighbours go through their routines and never question their leaders. All actions are made for the good of Harmony; the well being of individuals is secondary. When people do question the authorities, the results are not favourable. Delaney was one such character. She continually told her father, the high councilor of Harmony, that she was not content with her life. Her father then led his people to believe that his daughter sadly took her own life when in fact she was mysteriously sent ‘away’ to another colony.

When Jacob begins to experience terrible headaches, he is unsure what is happening to him. As the days pass, the headaches subside and he starts to acquire vision. Initially, he sees blurry objects but soon enough things become much clearer. Being a very sensitive person, Jacob realizes there is a lot of beauty in life when you can see. He also realizes that the people in his community are not what they appear top be. There is a great deal of corrupt behaviour taking place in Harmony. How ironic?

As Jacob witnesses the goings-on of the community he is confused whether or not he should tell anyone about his physical changes. He does not want to sacrifice the beautiful colours and details that he is enjoying for the sake of Harmony. He decides to trust Egan, his best friend, with the secret. Much to Jacob’s surprise, Egan reports him to the authorities. At a special Gathering the next day, Jacob is presented to his fellow members of Harmony as a Seer. He is then taken away to the ghostbox to have his sight removed. Will Jacob undergo the computerized operation for the good of the community or will his independence demand that he seek refuge on the other side?

An interesting novel (strikingly similar to The Giver by Lois Lowry) that will no doubt spark discussion about our future.
