In this rhyming story, a boy’s mother is petrified to see a tiny mouse in the house and commands her young son to put an end to the varmint’s life. When the boy raises his shoe to terminate the mouse, he is met with a timid voice who begins to tell him his life story, all the while asking for pieces of cheese to abate his growing hunger. How could a boy refuse a rodent’s last rights?
Throughout the poem, the mother is shouting from the bedroom “Have you done it? Have you killed it? Have you rid us of the rodent?” while the mouse’s mother is wondering whether her son has done some fancy footwork to escape the execution. Readers really have to focus on the story as there are tales (pardon the pun!) woven with the larger tale that make for an exciting read-aloud story.
