This interactive storybook is ideal for those of us planning our summer holidays on the beach. Eight-year-old Hannah and her parents are spending their vacation at the seashore. With no friends of her own around, Hannah’s dad suggests that she send a message in a bottle and throw it to sea to see if anyone responds. Magically, Shelly, who lives close by in the rock pools, responds and says she would love to meet Hannah but is unable to play on the seashore because she is a mermaid. Wow, a mermaid! Hannah can’t believe her eyes. The interaction between the new friends continues through tiny letters that the reader is able to remove from the equally tiny envelopes in the book.

Near the end of the story there is a treasure map, which directs Hannah to buried treasure. There she finds the best treasure of all, a note from a young girl who is also looking for a friend on the beach.

Each page of the book has soft, water-colour illustrations that are bordered by seashells and stones bringing to life the magic of mermaids. There is even a surprise on the last page of the book that will have little girls squealing with delight. With its glittery cover this book is just right for little girls who loves mermaids.
