In this her second novella, teacher-turned-writer, Irene Punt, continues the adventures of Tom, a typical Canadian boy, who loves to play hockey. Tom and his three buddies eat, drink and breathe the national game. Mark, the comic of the group, teaches his friends a version of “We are the Champions” that makes everyone laugh. It also keeps them focused on their games and in the right frame of mind to want to win at everything they do. For Jordan, the shy yet talented goalie, this song helps him get through a difficult situation at school.

The boys’ teacher, Mrs. Wong has asked the class to speak publicly in front of the class. This is a nightmare for poor Jordan. His comrades help him out by suggesting he think of the song and put on his best face or at least his goalie mask. It is when he wears this mask that his confidence rises. And sure enough, it works. Jordan is able to get through the presentation without much trouble.

The trouble arises when there is a misunderstanding about the presentation and the boys find themselves in the principal’s office. Will they be able to make the principal understand what actually took place?

Punt has woven a familiar theme of being nervous in public situations in this “hockey” story. It will help youngsters understand that even great players have their weaknesses but that they can be overcome with help from friends. This companion story to The Wicked Slapshot has illustrations interspersed throughout making it a good choice for hockey players who are just learning to read on their own.
