The long-awaited companion to East to the Sea has arrived. Rothesay resident, Heidi Jardine Stoddart, has created yet another stunning picture book that is autobiographical in nature. The rhyming text is accompanied by vibrant, detailed illustrations.
In this latest story, the three sisters have grown up a little and head back East to visit their grandparents but instead of spending their whole vacation at the cottage in St. Martin’s they explore the Maritimes in their station wagon with the tent trailer in tow. They head to the windy shores of Peggy’s Cove then into the city of Halifax where keen eyes can spot Theodore Tugboat in the Harbour. After trekking through Nova Scotia, the family heads to Prince Edward Island where they adorn themselves with Anne hats, red braids and all.
It’s then back to New Brunswick to spend a few days with Nanny and Grampie. The Hartland covered bridge and fishing boats at high and low tide are captured beautifully by Heidi’s magnificent talent as a water-colour artist. One of my favourite images is that of the author and her grandfather embracing as they share memories of her trip by laying out her beach treasures one last time. She then whispers “The cottage is best!” in reference to her favourite part of her vacation. It is apparent from this story that the author and her Grampie have a very special bond.
There are some common themes in this story that are recognizable from the first book: the rope-turned borders on each page, the bonfire scenes and of course trademark seashells. However it is interesting to note how the sisters have grown up by way of their physical stature and their handwritten notes.
Benjamin’s Books is thrilled to host the launch of Return to the Sea on Saturday, June 9 at 2:00pm. All are welcome to hear Heidi speak about this latest achievement as well as read this lovely story. Please join us.
