This new picture book is apropos as we head into the summer wedding season. Some of us will be attending nuptial services for friends and family members this summer while some of us may even witness a grandparent remarrying.
The young boy in this tale is used to having his Nana all to himself. She baked cookies for him, knit him sweaters, and told him wonderful bedtime stories. That is all until she met Bob! Since she started dating Bob, Nana has changed. She gets pedicures on Fridays, takes long bubble baths and has even started wearing makeup! And there is no end in sight. It seems Bob is here to stay. His Mom and Dad are even double dating with Nana and Bob – what has the world come to?
The quirky illustrations are what make this book a winner. Graham has been able to transform Nana from a typical gray-haired grandmother with rollers in her hair and fuzzy slippers on her feet to a hip, jewelry-adorned, fashionista. The expressions on the characters are priceless including the bulldog as the grandson is telling Bob all about Nana’s downfalls: her gallstones, her arthritis and her memory which “is not as good as it used to be”.
Throughout the story, the young boy maintains that he does not “approve” of Nana and Bob. When it comes down to it at the wedding ceremony, will he change his tune?
Even if your grandma is not getting married this summer, you will thoroughly enjoy this fun story that shows youngsters that grandparents can have a life, too.
