Marvin is a third-grade student who lives with his brother, his sister and his parents. It has always been a mystery to him why he doesn’t look like the rest of his family. That is until now. While reading a current events article in his classroom he discovers that the King of Shampoon is looking for his son who was taken from him at birth. Coincidentally, Marvin discovers that the King, too, has red hair. He convinces Mr. and Mrs. Redpost (known formerly as his parents) that he should be taken to the city to have his blood tested to determine whether or not he is royalty. They go along with the plan and are pleased with the results.
Marvin and his two best friends, Stuart and Nick, are typical young boys who dream of imperial places when they convince themselves that Marvin must be the missing Prince Robert. They figure that the Redposts stole Marvin at birth. In fact they are the kidnappers. But what does that matter now when you consider the limitless amount of toys he will be able to buy as a Prince?
With its short chapters and illustrations throughout, this chapter book is great for new independent readers. This is the first in a series of eight books. Louis Sachar is the author of the award-winning story, Holes as well as many other novels for juvenile and young adult readers.
