Well, it’s that time of year again that mothers dread. No, it’s not because they have to start packing lunches everyday and helping with homework every night. It’s because for many, hockey season is just around the corner and mysteriously each year equipment disappears from the hockey bag and scatters itself throughout the house.
Young Nicholas is heading out to his first practice of the season when the hunt starts. Where are his shin pads? Where are his shoulder pads? What about his helmet? His mother and father and even his sister tell him he should really learn to look after his belongings. After scouring the house, Nicholas finally locates everything just in the nick of time. He calls to his mother that he is ready but lo and behold, his mother has lost her car keys. I guess none of us are impervious to misplacing our items.
St. Aubin’s illustrations are bang-on accurate. Nicholas’ mother holds her mug of morning coffee while lecturing him on the importance of looking after his things while he frantically races through the house. You feel like you are there and should help as you read this amusing story book for primary school-aged children.
