My nine year old son is not a strong reader. He loves hockey. Do you have any book suggestions?

  2. Mary Ann says:

I most definitely do as yours is a common question. Canadian author, Irene Punt has written a series of books that would likely suit your son. The titles are The Wicked Slapshot, The Funny Faceoff and Hockey Rules.

You may also try non-fiction books about hockey that give statistics on players.

There are also many storybooks written by Mike Leonetti that are based on real life events. Some of my favourites are The Greatest Goal, Number Four, Bobby Orr, Gretzky’s Game and A Hero Named Howe. Even though older children often think picture books are for very young children, this is not the case. Many picture books have a real lesson that can only be appreciated by older children.

Hi Mary Ann. Just wondering if you carry anything in the Charlie and Lola line? I am looking for the wooden puzzle titled, Pink Milk from that line.

    Thanks for your help.

Could you please recommend a fiction book for a 13 year old boy who has not discovered the joy of reading? This youth loves science, nature, bugs. Something uplifting and not too heavy, please.
    Thank you.

  6. Mary Ann says:

    Michelle,

Short stories are a good place to start for children/young adults who have not discovered the joy of reading yet. A collection of stories compiled by Jon Scieszka entitled Guys Write for Guys Read was published in 2005. It includes stories by Gordon Korman, Jerry Spinelli, Garth Nix and many more. The great thing about a collection is that if a story doesn’t resonate with the reader, he can move on to the next one.

A few other fictional choices are Chocolate River Rescue by Jennifer McGrath Kent, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Crowell.

And don’t forget…it is fine for children to read non-ficion books. They are still reading after all. There are many adults (especially men) who still only read non-fiction material. I have been trying for 12 years to get my husband to read fiction but with no luck yet he has a pile of business books at the side of the bed!

    Hi Mary Ann,

Do you carry the Little House Series, and if you do, are they soft or hardcover? I have a few of the titles from when I was young and now my 8 year old daughter and I are reading them, but I would love to get the whole series for her to read, Thanks!

  8. Mary Ann says:

    Vickie,

I trust you are satisfied with the service you received from Trish on the weekend. When I saw that you were ordering the boxed set of LH books, I realized you are the same person. Thanks for visiting and let us know if there are any other questions. We love a challenge.

I am wondering if you carry the Brambly Hedge series, specifically The Brambly Hedge Library (a box set of eight stories) or The Brambly Hedge Collection ( a box set of the original four stories plus an audio CD of the stories. It is a lovely series by the author Jill Barklem published originally in 1980 in the UK by Williams Collins. I have not been able to find it in Canada only the UK..

Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Sincerely,
    Simone Whyte

    Hi Mary Ann,
I’ve got a friend from Calgary and she just had a book published last year. I’ll give you her websites, and if you’re interested in contacting her, I can give you her email address, too. Her name is Lori Callaghan; I used to teach with her in Calgary. http://www.annbeepress.com and http://www.gogglz.com. You can also see a facebook page if you type in “The Adventures of Gogglz”.

Congrats on such success with the bookstore!
    Jocelyn
